Spring Gardening with Kids

It’s the season for new life, growth, and getting outside and into the garden! Springtime is optimal for planting the flowers that will add color to your landscape for the months to come, and getting a start on your family vegetable patch. As you get together your gardening gloves, tools, seeds, bulbs, and other materials, bring your kids into the garden with you. It will strongly benefit their development, and it’ll keep busy while you’re up to your elbows in weeds and dirt!

Mother, daughter and son planting flowers together.According to a fact sheet published a few years ago by The Children, Youth and Environments Center for Research and Drugs, “Exposure to healthy foods, moderate physical activity, and positive social interactions while gardening in childhood can lead to a lifetime of gardening.” The study found other benefits of gardening with kids, including improved positive social and interpersonal skills, healthy eating and nutrition, science achievement and attitudes towards learning, and self-efficacy and enhanced stewardship.

Here at Clover Toys, we have all the kid-sized tools and materials you need to get your child excited about gardening. Of course, we have kids gardening gloves, buckets, tools, watering cans and other essentials for digging, weeding, planting, growing… and whatever else they’re getting dirty doing in the garden. To educate your child, and to put together some creative ideas his or her own garden, Clover has a fun selection of books about gardening with kids. One of our favorites is “Sow and Grow: A Gardening Book for Children” by Tina Davis. This book has dozens of fun indoor and outdoor projects and ideas for gardening with kids year-round. Author Sharon Lovejoy has two excellent books for gardening with kids: “Roots, Shoots, Buckets and Boots” and “Sunflower Houses”. The first book has 12 easy ideas for theme gardens with planting recipes, growing instructions, and activities. “Sunflower Houses” has everything from poems to stories and riddles, from crafts to games and activities, and more. Use these books as a way to create memorable moments with your kiddos!

For fun gardening projects that don’t require a lot of forethought or preparation, Clover Toys has quite a few gardening and outdoor kits and prepared projects. We have bird feeder building kits, terrarium sets, a worm composting kit, and even botany kits for doing some inside gardening on a rainy day!
